Sublimation

by fireun

It was a fascinating collaboration, an endless pattern of coil, spring, recoil that decorated torsos and tree trunks with a madman’s masterpiece of splattered crimson. They were used to working together, dipping flawlessly in and out of each others rhythms to add a strike, to block a blow until that moment where nothing moved but their own heaving chests and calculating eyes.

Naruto licked a bit of blood off his lip, and Kakashi gritted his teeth against the way his attention was riveted on such a tiny, tantalizing movement.

He had been young once, his Naruto; all brash swagger and incomprehensible confidence. Dirt and dust had been innocent badges of scuffles won. Dirty, Naruto had been endearing, a cocky half smile twisting his features into something unavoidably enchanting. Bloodied, Naruto was damnably enthralling, moving with the calm grace of a warrior, the detached arrogance of a silent killer.

Kakashi had been young once, had never considered the pound of adrenaline and taste of blood an aphrodisiac.

They moved together with that same matchless gestalt that made them such a force to be reckoned with in battle. It was a different sort of battle they entered into, the sweat from the last still slick on their skin. It was a clash of tooth and claw, of gasps punctuated with impatient growls, demanding snarls. It was a rush of sensation to clear away the impartial façade of a killer, stepping over the remains of their opponents but never looking down.

Neither of them could afford to fall, so they worked to catch each other.

Naruto clawed insecurities into Kakashi’s back, gnawed unhappiness into his neck. Kakashi kissed regrets along Naruto’s jugular and fucked them both into a sense of belonging.

Naruto always complained about rough bark against his back, a sure sign he was uncomfortable with the honesty post combat coitus had tricked out of him, a clue that Kakashi should back off and away while Naruto recovered his pants and his composure. They each settled back into their trademark smiles as they reclaimed kunai from corpses and trees, careful not to touch lest their control shudder and crack from shared empathy.

They had been young once, but that was a luxury they could no longer afford.
